History

The Petersville congregation had a most unique beginning. For some two years, the facilities that once accommodated the Northwood Hills congregation (now Chisholm Hills) stood vacant. The possibility of purchasing the facilities and reopening the doors had been discussed by several on numerous occassions; however, no concrete plans had been submitted. Thirty-three men met in June, 1980 to discuss purchasing the existing property. The decision was unanimously reached to axqurie the property if possible. A proposal was submitted to the elders at Chisholm Hills. The proposal was turned down. A counter-proposal was accepted by those interested in purchasing the facilities and plans were finalized for the purchase.

A planning committee, trustees, and a treasurer were appointed. The firs assignment of the planning committee was to secure a preacher for the newly formed Petersville congregation. Derrel Davis, who had formerly preached at Stony Point was approached by the committee and accepted the offer to come on board as the first full time minister of Petersville (A second minister was hired in April, 1983, sonny Owens, who worked with the youth and later moved to the pulpit position at Mt. Zion Church of Christ). Many worked hard repairing and making presentable the facilities in which to worship and praise God. The first service was on Wednesday night, June 18, 1980. There were 196 present. A very positive, progressive, and optimistic attitude prevailed.

The first Lord^s day service was the following Sunday, June 22, 1980. Sunday school met at 9:00 a.m. there were 294 present. for morning worship at 10:00, there were 357 present. These numbers were by far much larger than had been anticipated. Obviously, all who met for the first service did not choose to be identified with the Petersville family. Many of the 357 were most welcomed guests. Contribution for the first Sunday was $3,680.80. Several gave liberally toward the purchase price of the property.

Derrel Davis resigned from full-time duty at Petersville in December 2000. Sonny Owens was hired to work in this vacant position and came aboard in January 2001, and worked until March of 2004 before moving to Eastwood Church of Christ. James W. Farris (Petersville^s current minister) was hired in June 2004, and began his ministry with us on August 8th, 2004. Dustin Culberson is our current youth and family minister who has been with us since, May of this year (2008). (Previous youth ministers were: Raymond Voigt, Ben Hayes, Wess Howell, Riley Turner, Garry Pannell, Sonny Owens).
